EditorÕs Introductory Note:

Thanks to the hosts for our post-holiday progressive potluck in January, who generously welcomed neighbors into their homes, helping us continue to build community in the Halcyon neighborhood!

There will be many other opportunities to build community as 2018 unfolds, whether through work parties in the park, disaster preparedness events and trainings, or social gatherings. Please participate when you can, and please consider donating to support our efforts on behalf of a safer, more convivial neighborhood (see item 1).

Yours in community,

—Nancy Carleton, HNA Co-Chair and E-News Editor, halcyon92@gmail.com

1. ItÕs Not Too Late! Support HNAÕs Annual Fundraising Appeal

EditorÕs note: Many thanks to those who have already contributed to HNAÕs Annual Fundraising Appeal. WeÕre still around four hundred dollars short of meeting our basic budget for 2018. Bottom line, only a small percentage of all the neighbors who benefit from our initiatives have contributed. If more neighbors could take the time to contribute right now (the online link makes it really easy), we would really appreciate it!

(1) Give to HNA online! Go to https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=QSESRB6FZAX3C to make your contribution. (Contributions to HNA arenÕt tax-deductible but allow us maximum flexibility.) PayPal keeps a fee of approximately 3 percent.

(2) Make a financial contribution directly to HNA (not tax-deductible, but allows us maximum flexibility and no fees are withheld) by writing a check made out to ÒHNAÓ and mailing or dropping it off in an envelope to HNA Treasurer Susan Hunter, 3044 Halcyon Court, Berkeley, CA 94705.

(3) Make a tax-deductible financial contribution by writing a check made out to ÒBerkeley Partners for ParksÓ (BPFP, our nonprofit fiscal sponsor, which charges a 7 percent overhead fee), earmarked Halcyon, and mailing or dropping it off in an envelope to HNA Treasurer Susan Hunter, 3044 Halcyon Court, Berkeley, CA 94705.

No contribution is too small (or too large!). If youÕd like to receive a copy of our year-end financial report, you can request it by writing halcyon92@gmail.com. Our neighborhood associationÕs health and vitality depend on your ongoing support! And in the event of a big earthquake, some of our lives may very well depend upon it. Please pitch in!

2. Work Party in Halcyon Commons & Surrounding Neighborhood, Sat. 3/10, 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Location: Halcyon Commons (Halcyon at Prince) RAIN OR SHINE!

Time Frame: Come anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sat. 3/10 (even twenty minutes helps!)

Goals: Weed and mulch in the park and nearby planted areas; remove graffiti (if the weather cooperates) & pick up trash in the larger neighborhood; enjoy the company of neighbors and student volunteers from the Berkeley Project

Fuel: Refreshments & lunch courtesy of Whole Foods Market; fresh coffee courtesy of Starbucks at Telegraph & Ashby

Once again weÕll enjoy the help of volunteers from the Berkeley Project as students from UC help us weed in the park and spread mulch. Note given the possibility of rain: WeedingÕs easier when the groundÕs wet! If you can help, just show up at Halcyon Commons. Bring your own weeding tools, or weÕll loan you some. Children welcome!

3. Disaster Preparedness: News from HNA CERT, Meeting Thurs. 2/22, 7 p.m.

EditorÕs note: Bill Swartz of the HNA CERT group submitted the following item.

Hi Everyone!

2017 was a great year for HNA CERT. We hosted 10-plus quality, applicable, useful, classes, added 40-plus new members and were approved for a second cache. But it was all prep.

This has to be the year HNA CERT pulls it together -- the year we move from a group that took a bunch of classes to a group that can work together when tragedy happens. And, by the way, enjoy and know each other even when weÕre just being neighbors. LetÕs shoot for the stars -- and create a safer, better, community.

There will be a planning meeting on Thursday, 2/22/18, at 7 p.m., address tbd. This will be a chance for all of us to plan our course for the rest of year. If you can possibly make it, please, please come. RSVP to hnacert@gmail.com appreciated but not required.

One thing I specifically want to talk about at the meeting is pulling together teams. None of these need any special training or commitment, just a willingness to help in an emergency:

* An information and recruiting team -- door knockers who will let the neighborhood know about CERT and get those willing to give CERT their information so we can help in an emergency. This is something Mishaa started last year and is ready for a final push.

* A medical team -- just basic first aid is enough. A group of people who would help the injured

* A search and rescue team

*A communications team

Sushi!!!! Yes, you read it right. Mieko and Mandy have pulled together a (vegetarian) sushi fundraiser on Saturday, March 10 (see item 3). Make and eat delicious Chirashi style sushi. More info and tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vegetarian-sushi-cooking-class-fundraiser-tickets-42516618350

Active Shooter/Mass Casualty Class

The Berkeley Police Department has just confirmed they will lead an active shooter/mass casualty event class for us. TheyÕve also appointed an HNA CERT liaison officer. Date and other details to be worked out, but I think weÕre the first local CERT group to have a class like this.

Please reach out with questions, suggestions, and most of all -- your enthusiasm and ideas.

See everyone soon,

Bill

4. Vegetarian Sushi Class Fundraiser for HNA CERT, Sat., 3/10, 3-6 p.m.

EditorÕs note: HereÕs a great way to support our HNA CERT groupÕs efforts for the first ten folks who sign up! Tickets at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vegetarian-sushi-cooking-class-fundraiser-tickets-42516618350

DESCRIPTION

Join us for an afternoon of sushi making and merriment -- all for a great cause! In this beginner-level cooking class, you will learn how to prepare vegetarian Chirashi-style sushi using local ingredients and traditional methods. You will then taste the fruits of your labor with a traditional home-style Japanese sushi meal.

What is Chirashi-sushi?

It is a type of sushi, different from nigiri (small delicate balls of rice typically with seafood toppings) or maki (the rolls), both now familiar in the US. It is everyoneÕs favorite birthday treat in Japan and a staple at celebratory family gatherings.

Who is teaching?

The class will be taught by Halcyon resident and Japanese native Mieko, who started cooking at age five and doesnÕt seem to be able to leave the kitchen.

This is a fundraiser!

Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Halcyon Neighborhood Association Community Emergency Response Team (HNA CERT).

Class overview:

* Learn the history and culture of sushi

* Discover and compare different varieties of rice

* Learn how to make the perfect sushi rice, the foundation for all types of sushi

* Learn to prepare all the toppings

* Learn how to make your own variations based on the solid traditional foundation

* Receive a shopping list of ingredients (easily available at Berkeley Bowl) to replicate this meal at home

* Enjoy the fruits of your labor with a traditional home-style Japanese sushi meal

* Have fun, get to know your neighbors, and raise money for a great cause

Notes: Class size is limited -- only ten seats available! If this event sells out, you can add your name to the wait list. If a spot opens up, you will be contacted by email with purchasing instructions. This class will be taught at a private residence and the ownerÕs dog will be on the premises. The exact street address will be provided in your ticket purchase confirmation email. This class may be offered again in the future. Please stay tuned.

Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, March 16, 2018, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)

These meetings are held at the Community Table at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss with HNA reps and nearby neighbors. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the group below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
